I’ve finished my first week of the semester, and similar to many of you, all of my classes are online for the semester. Staying productive, focused, and organized from home can be very difficult. I struggled in the Spring when classes moved online, so I went into this semester very determined to start off on a good note to set the tone for the entire semester. I wanted to share some of my tips for staying organized and productive with online classes, specifically in law school!
- Planner- I use my planner like a Bible. If it’s not in the planner it’s not happening! Okay that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I do try to put everything in my planner including classes, readings, things I need to do for work, workouts, meal ideas etc. It’s hard to stay organized if you’re forgetting things or focusing on the wrong tasks, so if you don’t have a planner get one ASAP.
- Google Calendar- While I do love my physical planner, I like using Google Cal so that I get notifications since I’m obviously not looking at my planner all day.
- Get a Whiteboard- I have a white board at my desk to write important reminders and random things to do just so I don’t forget anything, and it is also super satisfying to cross things off.
- Choose Your Top 3 Tasks Per Day- You CANNOT do it all! We are all human and cannot get mad at ourselves for failing to get a million things done in a day. This is why it is a good rule of thumb to choose your 3 most important things to do. These will be your must-do tasks, and anything else you get done will be a bonus.
- Read a Week Ahead- This is hands down my best law school tip. Reading a week ahead reduces stress astronomically because you aren’t rushing to finish a reading before class. It takes off the pressure of having to get a reading done in a limited amount of time.
- Have a “Get Your Life Together Day”- For me, this is Sunday. I like to use this day to deep clean my apartment, do laundry, get my week planned out, get ahead on school work etc. I’ve found that having this kind of day on Sunday’s sets my week off on the right tone and helps me stay on top of everything throughout the week.
