Dealing with distractions and feeling productive while working from home is hard. Over the past year, I’ve learned a few tricks for increasing productivity. Focusing on a few good habits can make SUCH a difference when you’re trying to stay focused and productive.
#1 – Track Your Time
You may not realize it, but the amount of time you spend on each task can make or break your productivity. This is why it is so crucial to REALLY reflect on how you’re spending your time in a day. Timing yourself while working on tasks increases your awareness and shows you how much you’re actually getting done in a certain amount of time.
#2 – Organize “Mental Clutter” Before Working
As someone with ADHD, “mental clutter” seems to always distract me. This is why I like to do a “brain dump” before working. I’ll write down anything on my mind, whether it’s something I need to do later, something I need to research, literally anything. This way, I can see if anything is urgent, and if not, I can set it all aside until later when I’m not working.
#3 – Put Your Phone/Computer on Do Not Disturb
Putting my laptop on do not disturb while working has been a GAME CHANGER. I did not realize how distracting it was to be getting a million notifications when I’m working or in Zoom meetings. Same goes for your phone!
#4 – Make Sure to Actually Take Breaks!
It can be easy to fall into the work work work mentality and forget to take breaks, but this actually hurts your productivity. You NEED to take breaks to give your brain time to rest and reset. If possible, take your breaks outside to get some vitamin D! I’ve found that even a 10 minute walk outside can boost my mood and energy levels.
#5 – Set Boundaries
This is so important. You need to set work-life balance boundaries. Try your best not to be consumed by work during non-work hours. You have to give yourself time to rest so that you can show up each day being your best self, in addition to avoiding burn out.
