I’ve wanted to write this post for a while now, and am finally getting around to it. I’m very passionate about health and fitness, and living a healthy life is important to me. Before starting law school, I knew I’d be busy, but I wanted to make sure to be mindful of making time to stay healthy. Not only is working out and eating healthy important for your physical health, but at least for me, working out significantly helps my mental health and is crucial for managing the stress and anxiety of law school. I wanted to share some of my favorite tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle even as a busy law student! Hope you all enjoy.
- Get into a workout routine before law school: If you’re reading this and you haven’t yet started law school, start working out now! I got a lot better about working out last summer, so that I was used to incorporating workouts into my daily routine before starting school. If you’re already in law school, it’s never too late to start, but it is easier to start healthy habits before you’re up to your eyeballs with school work.
- Get creative with your workout times: During your 1L year, you have a set schedule that you don’t get to choose, and your schedule may vary a lot day to day depending on class time. So get creative with when you’re making time to get active. On days where I had several hours between classes, I would workout between classes. On days when I didn’t have early morning classes, I would workout in the morning. On days when my classes were early but over by noon, I would workout in the afternoon. Get flexible with when you make time to workout.
- Don’t feel guilty for making time to workout: I struggled with this a lot. I would feel guilty for taking time out of my day to workout when I had school work to do. But just remember that working out will give you energy and help your mental state and that time isn’t being wasted! Unless it is finals week, you can most likely find time to workout.
- Take advantage of short workouts: Odds are you won’t have the time to frequently spend time going to and from a workout class every day. But that is okay! Try a 15 minute HIIT workout, go for a 30 minute walk or run. Workouts do not have to be long to be effective.
- Stop eating out: My law school had a cafe that was super convenient and I too often would buy lunch or go get fast food because it was easy. Not only is this not very healthy but it is also expensive and adds up fast. If you’re going to be at school all day, bring healthy snacks and a lunch! I found that keeping protein bars in my backpack would stop be from going to the vending machines and this definitely helped me eat a bit healthier.
- Try meditation/ yoga: Law school is stressful. Learning how to manage your stress levels and anxiety is crucial for living an overall healthy life. Taking a few minutes a day to meditate, do yoga, or stretch can be so relaxing and can help you stay present and calm down for a few minutes. I found that meditating and doing yoga for a few minutes before bed helps be sleep better without worrying about school stuff.
- Get enough sleep: I know I know this is super cliche. But your brain will not function how it is supposed to if you’re sleep deprived all of the time! How much sleep you need varies from person to person, but I’ve found that I cannot focus if I don’t get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Things happen, and time to time you might have to stay up late or get up early to finish a reading or paper. But don’t make a habit of that. For some reason, I seemed to be fine being sleep deprived in college, but that has not been the case for me in law school. Remember that law school is a marathon not a sprint. You cannot thrive academically if your physical and mental health are suffering.
- Be mindful about your coffee consumption: I am so guilty of sometimes drinking WAY too much coffee. But this is simply not healthy. During my first semester I found myself drinking several coffees and energy drinks every day and this was not good for my health. I would get anxious and jittery and lose my appetite. Everyone has a different caffeine tolerance, but I eventually gave myself a two coffee per day max.
