One of the few positives of the pandemic has been the extra time in the mornings. Today I’m sharing my morning routine tips & ideas for online students to boost productivity and have a better day!
Wake up early (ish)
I know it can be tempting to sleep in later without having to commute to school in the mornings. But waking up early-ish will give you time for a morning routine, and will start your day on a good and productive note. Waking up right before class can leave you stressed and overwhelmed, so find the right time to wake up that will allow you to take some time for yourself.
Avoid going on your phone for 30 minutes
When I wake up and grab my phone right away, I find that my morning does not start off on the right note. We’re all guilty of being on our phones and social media too much, but it’s important to keep in mind that nothing on Instagram is urgent. It can wait until later. You’re emails can wait until you start working for the day. My rule of thumb is to try to avoid my phone for 30 minutes after waking up unless I’m playing a podcast/ audiobook.
Open the blinds
This seems trivial, and it takes 5 seconds, but open the damn blinds! When I don’t do this, my apartment stays darker, and it absolutely affects my mood and productivity. Open them as soon as you get out of bed, and it will become a habit.
Meditate/ journal
I’m going to be honest, I don’t love meditating. But I’m also a very anxious and busy person, and meditating for even just a few minutes affects my mental health significantly. I use Headspace because the price for students is about $10 per year, and I love having the option to do a quick 3 or 5 minute meditation. It’s hard to use the excuse “I don’t have time” when literally everyone has 3 minutes.
Skincare routine
Take care of your skin! No matter what I do my skincare routine every single morning and night, and I’ve found that having a go-to simple routine is key.
Fuel your body with a healthy meal
A lot of people skip breakfast, and I’m one of them. I get anxious or busy or I’m not hungry, but breakfast is so important! I notice such a difference when I eat breakfast versus when I don’t. If you aren’t super hungry in the mornings, something I like to do is have a simple smoothie or fruit. Even eating a little bit will make you feel better. And when you’re hungrier, listen to your body and take time to make a nourishing breakfast.
Get some movement in
I’m not a huge fan of early morning workouts, but getting in a little movement in the morning is really great for you. I like to move in some way, whether it’s walking my dog for a little longer than normal, or doing a quick 10 minute yoga video, I’ve found this to really affect my mood and energy level throughout the day.
Change out of your pajamas
I know how hard this can be some days. But even just changing into workout clothes or some joggers will make you feel better and ready for the day!
