5 Tips for the Summer Before Law School

Summer is here! And I’m oh so happy about it. But that also means that a ton of you will be preparing to start law school in the fall. I wanted to share my top 5 tips for the summer to set you up for success in the fall.

Read for FUN

I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT waste your summer reading law school advice books. You will learn everything you need to know at orientation, and once you start law school you will rarely have time to read for fun. So if you enjoy reading for fun, do it as much as you possibly can this summer!

Relax. No like seriously

While I do think it important to adopt good habits and be somewhat productive, this is going to be the least stressful time for you for the next three years. Now is the time to binge watch shows on Netflix, listen to new podcasts, try new recipes, and do all of the things that make you happy! Once you start school it is crucial to still make time for these things, but for now it is important to take advantage of having time.

Budget & Practice Saving $$$

You are most likely going to be balling on a budget in law school. So practice making good financial decisions and learning to spend within your means. If you’re working this summer, be sure to set money aside. I worked the entire summer before starting law school and was SO grateful later to have extra spending money later on.

If you have a little extra spending money right now, I’d also highly recommend Investing! It doesn’t have to be as confusing and complicated as it seems. I have an entire post on Investing Tips for Students, which you can check out here. My favorite apps to invest and earn passive income are Robinhood (click the link for a FREE stock!) and M1 Finance.

ALSO! If you are guilty of doing too much online shopping, like me, be sure to create a Rakuten Account to get cashback on everyday purchases.

Work on Your Mental Health

This is SO important. Law school is extremely emotionally and mentally taxing. So this is a great time to implement healthy habits and prioritize your mental health, so when you start law school you have a solid foundation for coping with stress.

Get All of Your School Materials Early

Don’t wait until the last minute to get things you need! Whether it’s a new computer, textbooks, commercial supplements, or anything else, not waiting until the last minute will save you a ton of stress I promise.
