How 2L is Different From 1L

During 1L, they “scare you to death,” but during 2L, they “work you to death.” I didn’t know what to expect when starting 2L year, but I’ve noticed SEVERAL differences between 1L and 2L that I wanted to share with all of you 🙂

How 2L Differs from 1L

Professor’s Stop Holding Your Hand

This was one of the most noticeable differences from 1L. During 1L it may not seem like professor’s are holding your hand in comparison to college or high school, but believe me they are. Once you’re a 2L, they expect you to have your sh*t together.

This doesn’t mean that they don’t want to help you though! You just need to take the initiative to go to them and be specific about how they can help you.

They’ll “Work You to Death”

This is 1000% true. Classes are more rigorous, you’re expected to participate in clinics and clubs and intern while managing a class load. I RARELY pulled all-nighters during 1L, but stayed up all night way more than I’d like to admit during 2L.

The Pressure is Intense

Obviously pressures exist during 1L year. But during 2L, everything starts to feel more real. It seems more crucial to get relevant work experience, and the pressure to know what you want to do after law school becomes much more intense. However, it is important to remember that no one actually has it all together, and you do have time to figure it out.

Classes are More Interesting & Enjoyable!

I liked 2L SO MUCH MORE than 1L. And a huge part of that was the fact that I got to take classes I was genuinely interested in. When you’re interested and passionate about a course’s material, the readings start to feel actually enjoyable and not like a chore.

You Will Read Faster Than You Did During 1L

As a 1L, it takes a while to adjust to reading legal material. I remember re-reading cases over and over again and just not understanding it. But your skills really do drastically improve. I noticed that I read so much faster this year, and it was so much easier for me to understand takeaways of a case. This was a nice confidence boost and reminder that I wasn’t dumb during 1L, it just takes time to adjust to law school.

I hope you all enjoyed this post!
