The dreaded law school application season is quickly approaching. For anyone reading this blog who plans on applying to law school in the fall, I know how overwhelming it can be, and I wanted to share the advice and tips I have. There are definitely things I wish I did differently when it comes to law school applications. For me, law school applications were far more stressful than college applications. As most of you know, I ended up transferring law schools, and my transfer applications ended up being a lot less stressful because I had already been through the initial application process. I have a separate post on applying to transfer law schools here. I hope you all enjoy this post, and if you have any questions that I didn’t address, don’t hesitate to let me know!
Figure out if law school is really right for you: Before going through the entire application process, really contemplate whether law school is right for you. I have seen a ton of people go to the law school for the wrong reasons, and if I had to do it all over again I would have taken time off before attending. Law school is really damn hard, and if you aren’t there because it is wholeheartedly what you want to do, it is going to be extremely difficult to stay motivated and determined. Your college GPA/ major: Your college major really doesn’t matter. As long as you take the LSAT and get into law school, you can go. I took the stereotypical political science route, but it was more so because I loved my political science classes than because I wanted to maybe go to law school. If you’re positive you want to go to law school and are still in college, I would recommend majoring in something you enjoy and won’t kill your GPA. If I could go back I wouldn’t change my major, but I wish I would have taken more philosophy classes, because I feel like they would have been helpful for the LSAT. Regarding GPA, I had a good GPA in college and I personally think that helped me get into law school. However, I had several friends in law school with GPA’s lower than mine and lower than my school’s average. Also, there were people with GPA’s way higher than mine. GPA is NOT everything, but it is important. If you had life circumstances negatively affect your GPA, write an addendum about what happened in your life and how it impacted your academic performance, and how you used that to grow and learn.

Choose a range of schools to apply to: I didn’t know where I wanted to go to law school at all. I want to say I applied to around 13 schools and I don’t regret this at all. Choose some “reach schools” (1 or 2) that you don’t think you’ll get into, because you never know what can happen. When I applied to transfer, I got into a school that I almost didn’t apply to because my GPA was lower than their 25th percentile, but you just never know! I would say the majority of the schools you apply to should be “target schools.” Your GPA and LSAT should be right on point with the school’s averages. If you don’t know where you want to be geographically, apply to a range of cities/ states. I knew I wanted to live in a city, but didn’t know where, so I applied to schools in New York, LA, Seattle, etc. Also, it is super important to apply to a couple of “safety schools.” Your GPA and LSAT should be higher than their averages, and while they might not be your ideal school, you’re confident you would get in and probably with a generous scholarship offer.
Letters of recommendation: Schools have different requirements for letters of recommendation, but as a general rule I would say aim to have one academic letter and one professional letter. The key thing to remember is relationship over reputation. You might have a parent who is mutual friends with a judge or politician, but the letter this person would write for you is going to be very generic and not personal. Choose people who know you well, and can write about your academic abilities. Also ask in person well in advance, and send a hand-written thank you note or email after they submit your letter!
Your resume: This is pretty simple and you can find a ton of sample resumes online. The most important thing to remember is that you’re applying to a school, not a job. So for me, I included more of my college extracurriculars, and I kept the part-time job I had during college on my resume, even though these are things I usually keep off of my professional resume.
Personal statement: Your personal statement is SO IMPORTANT. If you have a lower GPA or LSAT, this is your chance to tell your story to the admissions committee. Don’t write about what you think they want to hear, but write about who you are. You need to use this statement to tell the admissions committee what they wouldn’t know about you based on your GPA/ LSAT. Here is a great article on personal statements by U.S. News.
Character and fitness: When applying, you have to answer character and fitness questions. The purpose of this is to ensure you will be able to be admitted to the bar. The most important thing is to be honest. If your answer on your application doesn’t match what you later disclose to the bar, you’re going to have a problem. Disclose any disciplinary actions against you from college, any arrests etc. I requested a copy of my Dean’s Certification from my college to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I ended up even disclosing a noise violation from the dorms my freshman year that I received a warning for, because it was on my record. Everyone makes mistakes. Whether it was something in college, an arrest, a DUI, etc. explain it candidly and explain what you learned from it and how you avoided making that mistake again. Most of the time this will NOT stop you from getting into law school.
Early decision: Some schools have binding early decision programs with very generous scholarship award amounts. This means that if you get in, you must attend and withdraw all other applications. I only recommend this option if you are 110% set on a school and know you want to go there. But if that is the case for you, then go for it.
