Hello friends and welcome back to my blog! Today I wanted to share an overview of the law school application timeline. I know that for me, law school applications were very stressful, and far more confusing than college applications. It can be hard to have everything in order and stay on top of everything while applying, so I wanted to make an example timeline for anyone who is currently applying for law school! Just please remember that you will end up where you’re supposed to be, and the schools you get into do NOT define your worth or how intelligent you are. I plan on doing an entire post on dealing with rejection from law schools because there is so much I wish I could go back and tell myself two years ago.
October:
Ideally, October is the month when you should complete and compile all of the materials needed for applications. I would also highly recommend having others review your materials, such as your resume and personal statement. If you feel comfortable, let several people review your personal statement, friends, coworkers, professors, etc. Below is a list of application materials needed for most law schools. Of course be sure to double check with each school, as some may require additional material.
- LSAT Score (or GRE score for some schools) – And you’ll need LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service in order to send your score to schools
- Official Transcripts (You will need separate transcripts from any college you attended- including dual enrollment credits obtained in high school, Community College, and Study Abroad institutions, even if these grades are reflected on your main transcript)
- Personal Statement
- Resume
- Letters of Recommendation
- Supplemental Essays such as diversity statements or an addendum (optional)
***If you are planning on applying to any schools for Early Decision, many of these deadlines are in November so keep that in mind!
November:
Once you have all of your main materials ready to go, start completing each application. However, this is very time consuming, and I remember really underestimating how much time it took to complete each application and any supplemental materials that the school may require. Make sure you aren’t missing any deadlines, but I would recommend prioritizing your top choice schools and getting those applications submitted first.
December:
December is the perfect time to finish up any remaining applications. For me, I wanted to finish all of my apps by the holidays so that I could relax and enjoy time with friends and family. This worked well for me and I would highly suggest finishing your applications in December. But if you don’t finish, don’t stress! Many schools accept applications until February, but don’t rely on this because as time goes on, schools have less acceptances to give out.
The Spring:
This is when you will be hearing back from schools and trust me I know how stressful these few months are! This is a whole separate post so stay tuned for that.
