That was by far the most personal post I’ve written which I was kind of nervous about, but I figured only a few people would read it anyways. It ended up being my most viewed post, and I’ve gotten some of the sweetest messages on Instagram and I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it. I wanted to continue to be raw and real on here because I think it is so easy to think people have everything together all the time, which is so far from the truth. Today I wanted to open up about what it is like being young in law school. During my 1L year, I was the youngest student at my school. I graduated both high school and college early, so I had just turned 21 a week prior to starting law school. This might not seem like a huge deal, and it’s not, but being thrown into an environment where the majority of students were in their mid-twenties and had careers before attending law school was really intimidating and my age became a huge insecurity of mine.
Transitioning from the college environment to law school is challenging. Law school is a professional school, and your professional reputation and identity is much more important than in college. I remember feeling so out of place during orientation sitting in a sea of people in business professional wear. They talked to us during orientation week about impostor syndrome, and how it is something almost all law students experience at some point. As the year went on, I found that everyone has their insecurities. For me, I felt like I was somehow undeserving of being there for being a few years younger than my peers, which is ridiculous.
Everyone in law school, and just in general, is insecure about something. But the truth is, everyone is so worried about themselves, that they are not paying any attention to you! Remember, if you’re in law school, you were admitted to that school just like all of your peers. You deserve your seat at the table regardless of your age, professional background, academic capabilities, the list goes on. Whether you’re 21 or 60, you deserve to be there, and in the end you will be a lawyer just like everyone around you. There are very few people whose opinions of you actually matter, and most of the time people are not thinking about your “flaws” at all. I wish I could go back to last August and tell myself that no one cares how old you are, live your life, do your best, and mind your business.
