As some of you may know, I transferred after my first year of law school. It was a huge decision, but transferring ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. BUT there are a few things I wish I would’ve known first, which is why I wanted to share a few of those things with you all!
5 Things I’ve Learned
Transferring Law Schools Was a Game Changer for Me
As I mentioned in the intro, transferring was a game changer. I wasn’t happy at my previous law school, and felt like it was normal to feel like that. It isn’t! There is a difference between struggling with being a law student and keeping up with everything and not feeling like you are in an environment that will allow you to work toward your goals. If you feel like transferring is something that would make you significantly happier, that is probably a sign that it is something you should pursue.
The difference in rigor was very noticeable
I transferred to a MUCH better school. And while 1L was very academically challenging, I definitely noticed an increased level of rigor after transferring. However, it wasn’t unmanageable. I’ve found that this contributed to my imposter syndrome, but you have to keep in mind that if a school accepts you, they clearly think you are qualified.
3Ls that transferred the previous year are very helpful
I met a few 3Ls that had transferred the year before, and they were SO helpful to go to for advice because they truly get it. My school had a transfer student Facebook page where we could connect with students who had previously transferred, and I found this to be a very helpful resource.
It takes more effort to get involved
This might be obvious, but as a 1L it is so easy to join a bunch of clubs and get involved. It is much harder as a transfer student, and especially with my entire 2L year being virtual, I honestly didn’t get TOO involved.
Not having a GPA at first is stressful
Your grades don’t transfer, which can be a good thing depending on your 1L grades. However, my first semester of 2L was very stressful because I didn’t have a GPA yet and also had no idea how I was going to do on exams at my new school. But it does all work out, and remember that your GPA is NOT LIFE OR DEATH! Being at a better school can be a huge help as well, so GPA is simply not worth being overly stressed about.
You don’t have to fit in with everyone, do your own thing
This applies to everyone, not just transfers, but who gives a sh*t what people think about you! I dealt with feeling dumb during cold calls or feeling like I wasn’t following the traditional paths that other students were following. But at the end of the day, most people truly do not care about you at all. So do your thing, do what makes you happy, and if anyone even notices and doesn’t like it, that is on them!
